The Minority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Julius Okpoko, Member representing Okpe Constituency on the platform of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) on Sunday, embarked on an empowerment scheme for his constituents in what was termed as a sham, fraud and a slam on the face of the people of Okpe Kingdom.
In a bid to showcase his benevolence to the people, the Honourable Member had invited the media to extensively cover the program, held at the Adane-Okpe Primary School, only to the chagrin of the constituents; a large number of them went home with brown envelopes containing N5, 000 each.
Others who were lucky enough, got shaving clippers, small generators popularly known as “I pass my neighbour” and sewing machines.
In a chat with a visibly angry female beneficiary of the N5, 000 envelopes, who spoke in the local dialect, she said, “It is such a pity that the person we sent to represent us at Asaba can define N5, 000 as empowerment.
“On his giving out of clippers and sewing machines, did he train people on tailoring and hair cut for him to be giving out these?” She queried.
A male beneficiary who spoke on anonymity with this reporter, confirmed that two cars, a Camry and a Golf 3 car was given, but was quick to add that, both cars had been acquired by the Minority Leader three months ago, but were officially handed to the users today after the plate numbers were removed to indicate they were just purchased.
When the DTHA member was contacted on the reports, he said, “There is no way you can satisfy anybody in such a program and you know that.”
Coincidentally, the Okpoko Empowerment Scheme was held on the same day, the entire Urhobo Nation was grieving the loss of the Senator representing Delta Central, Senator Pius Ewherido who died in the evening of the same day of a mysterious ailment.
Prior to now, Okpoko had been in the storm when an NGO, Delta Women indicted him as a stumbling block in the facilitation of a school in Okuijorogu community in Okpe LGA of the State. The report had it that, Okpoko was aggrieved that the community didn't vote for him in the last general election, an allegation Okpoko vehemently denied.
